The Guru program was initiated
by WotC to get veteran players to recruit new Magic players. Participants
in the Guru program received demo packs of cards which they could use to
train a new player. If the new player was interested, they would get a
coupon to buy more cards. These coupons carried the Guru's ID. As the Guru
points were tabulated, special alternate art basic lands were awarded.
