One of
the oldest and bestest of the various Magic hoaxes is the Throat
Wolf, the creature with firstest strike. The legend of the Throat
Wolf goes way back, almost to the beginning of Magic itself. I like
to think of it as the rarest of all Magic cards, with even fewer in
existence than 1996 World Champion or Shichifukujin Dragon.
The
legend was formalized in an article printed in Duelist #9. The
article detailed the exploits of a reporter tasked to track down the
elusive Wolf. He was not successful.
Throat Wolf article by Mike Selinker
The Throat Wolf
reared its ugly head once again in the playtest set of cards
for Mirage. Not exactly double first strike, but it's
close. It didn't make it into Mirage, but a similar
card showed up in Visions (Talruum Champion). The story
of the Mirage Throat Wolf is chronicled in this Magic
Arcana column. |

THROAT WOLF 5 Summon Throat Wolf (4/4)
Firstest Strike
Throat Wolf may attack during your opponent's untap phase. Attacking does
not cause Throat Wolf to tap.
The most feared of Dominia's mythical creatures, the Throat Wolf is
wylie and unpredictable. Its incredible speed and attack abilities have
prompted many net.wizards to wonder if it is real. Ask the Throat Wolf,
he'll tell you... |
